Bedfordshire PCC vows to stand with Luton Roma Trust

Bedfordshire PCC vows to stand with Luton Roma Trust

The PCC recently visited the Luton Roma Trust (LRT), to discuss contributions and challenges faced by the Roma community living in Luton.

LRT specifically support the Luton Roma community and surrounding areas to integrate them into the wider life of the town.

Crina Morteanu, charity Manager for LTR said “As the only Roma charity in Bedfordshire having worked towards the social integration of the Roma community for more than ten years, we are appalled by the increasing number of incidents motivated by hate against the Roma as well as the presence of the anti-Romani feeling in the town.

“We are calling for authorities to make every possible effort to eradicate hate crime against one of the most vulnerable minority groups in the country as incidents motivated by hate have devastating effects for the victims and their families. In addition, they undermine inclusion and equality through violating their human dignity.

“This cannot happen by the charity alone so we were pleased that the PCC took the time to understand our needs and how he can support us, and we remain committed to working together towards eradicating this phenomenon.”

John spent time with LRT and has promised to help to raise awareness of the charity, more specifically ensuring the Roma community is treated fairly and equitably by local authorities, Bedfordshire Police and public agencies.

John said “Luton’s Roma community makes a fantastic contribution to the town. It was good to discuss how we can strengthen police-community relations.

“We agreed a shared mission to tackle all forms of hate crime and discrimination.

“Wherever you live, whatever your gender, race, sexual orientation, disability, faith, religion or age you are entitled to be able to live your life without fear, prejudice, discrimination and hate.

“As long as I am PCC there will be zero tolerance of hate crime and those who perpetuate it should always be subject to the full force of the law”.

Bedfordshire Police have teamed up with schools and local authorities in Bedfordshire to share the message that there is no place for hate in Bedfordshire.

The force’s Community Cohesion team is linking in with groups and pupils across the county educating about hate crime, what it is, and crucially, how to report.

John further commented: “I look forward to continuing to work with charities such as Luton Roma Trust and other partners, residents, and the local authorities to highlight the importance and benefit of solidarity and inclusion in Bedfordshire.
